STEPHEN T MULLEN, SR - OBITUARY

Mr. Stephen Thomas "Steve" Mullen, Sr., 77, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013 following a courageous battle with bladder cancer.

Steve was born on Old Cherry Point Road on August 26, 1936 to Julia Boyd Mullen and John G. Mullen. He was a graduate of New Bern High in 1954, and went on to get his Electrical Engineering degree from NC State in 1958.

After college, Steve worked at USMC Base Cherry Point, Dept of Navy Civil Service. In 1966, he joined Lockheed Corp in Marietta, GA. In 1969, the US Navy recruited him to Naval Air Engineer Center in Philadelphia, PA, and in 1976, Steve was instrumental in moving NAEC to Lakehurst, NJ, where he was Systems Engineering Branch Head.

In 1992, Steve, and the love of his life, Arleen, moved back to his New Bern home, on his beloved Neuse River. Although traveling around the world together, they always felt at home on the river. In his retirement, Steve was an active member of Riverdale United Methodist Church, Eastern North Carolina Genealogical Society, a charter member of the East Carolina Saltwater Fishing Club, US Army National Guard, Doric Lodge # 568 AF & AM Masonic Lodge, and unselfishly served his country in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary for 19 years. He was the Flotilla Commander of the New Bern Flotilla in 2004, Boat Crew training Coordinator, QE Sector, NC, and many other positions. Steve was known as an honest man of the highest integrity. He loved to fish anywhere and anytime, yet his greatest joy was being a father and grandfather.

Funeral services for Steve will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Riverdale United Methodist Church. Burial, with Masonic Rites and National Guard honors, will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-7:30 PM, Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Pollock~Best Funeral Home and other times at the family home.
