EDGAR ROBERT GASKINS, SR - OBITUARY
Edgar Robert Gaskins Sr., 76, of New Bern, NC died at home on Monday, August 19, 2013.
The son of the late Carsley Edgar Gaskins and late Edna Ruth Coward, both of Vanceboro, NC, he was a Class of 1954 graduate from New Bern Senior High School.Edgar was honorably discharged from the Army in 1966. He went on to become a Master Craftsman apprenticeship instructor in the Civil Service for the Navy at Cherry Point Naval Air Depot, and retired in 1992.
Edgar enjoyed water skiing, taking care of his neighbors, building projects for others, and was arguably the best pool player in New Bern. He traveled to all 50 states with family almost always along for the fun, with the most notable exception being his trip to Vermont after his mother asked to try some real maple syrup. Edgar was a selfless problem solver and able to bring a smile to the face of anyone he met in any setting.
He was a dedicated family man with a large extended family. He is survived by his children; Lisa Gaskins Jefferson and husband Doug of New Bern, Lori Ann Gaskins of Grand Cayman, and Edgar Robert Gaskins Jr. of Atlanta, and their mother and his ex-wife Sondra Moffat of Pollocksville; his grandchildren Bradford Paul Jefferson and Emily Elizabeth Jefferson both of New Bern; and his brothers Jackie Lenward Gaskins of Shallotte, John Wayne Gaskins of Vanceboro, and Joe Allen Gaskins of Phoenix and their families. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a stillborn sister.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, at the Lakeside Chapel at Greenleaf Memorial Park. Visitation with family will be at the chapel at 9 a.m., and after the service at his home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.pollockbest.com.
